Learn to capture your thoughts and observations with simple sketches and note-taking. This fun method can be done by anyone and takes the pressure off ‘being able to draw’ or ‘being able to write’. In this warm, encouraging session, Suzy Cooper will teach you how to simplify the things you’d like to draw, and to develop your own sketchbook style.

Suzy’s method has been developed for non-drawers and non-writers, or anyone who wants to learn to sketch without getting hung up with it being perfect. Use this method however you like: keep a daily journal, record what’s growing in your garden, illustrate your poems or other writing, make cards, or simply sketch whenever you’re out and about.

All materials are provided for you to use and keep and you’ll be fully supported.

What to expect from this session:

  • You’ll get your own set of lovely, portable art materials to use on the day and take home with you
  • Suzy will show you her method of combining words and drawings — you can copy it, modify it or completely change it
  • Learn how to take better photos and to use them to draw from (bring your smartphone to the session)
  • Learn sure-fire ‘cheat’ ways to add sketches to your work if you’re not confident or run out of ideas
  • Head in to TMAG to practice your sketch noting skills, by yourself or with Suzy or others in the group
  • The TMAG Cafe will be open, or you can make yourself a cuppa and snack after the session so you can talk to others and share your work (if you want).

After the session, you’ll receive:

  • follow-up emails with tips and info about where to buy materials, ideas for projects etc
  • the chance to join a private Facebook group where you can share your sketches with other encouraging people
  • occasional invitations to join casual sketch sessions.

Accessibility: This session is accessible and walking isn’t essential. There is ramp access into the Members’ Lounge at TMAG. While students usually go into the museum to find things to draw, anyone who’s not able to walk easily will certainly find some excellent things in and around the Members’ Lounge.

    The idea of sketch noting

Here’s how Suzy Cooper describes her sketch noting:

‘I’m a writer who wanted to draw more. I’d done some classes but didn’t see myself as an artist or even a sketcher. I’d tend to get overwhelmed when looking at any particular scene – so many details! After learning some basic visual facilitation techniques I had a breakthrough about how to simplify words and sketches in a way you couldn’t get wrong. By repeating these ideas, I found that I could make sketch journals that were fast and fun to create, and that looked good. I came up with my stress-free method which uses simple, portable tools, some easy-to-remember rules (which you're encouraged to break, if you want), and easy ways to break through ‘detail overload’ and start to see differently. I’ve had almost a hundred students do these workshops with me so far and every single one has left the sessions with several sketches and the skills and encouragement to keep going.’

Suzy is a long-time member of the Friends, and served on our Friends committee a couple of years ago.
