Prokofiev 'War Sonatas'
You are invited to attend a performance by Ukraine-born pianist Alexey Yemtsov of one of Prokofiev’s ‘War Sonatas’. This is a very special opportunity to enjoy a rarely heard modernist masterpiece. As Picasso was to art, Sergey Prokofiev was to music — fresh, vital and bracingly modern.
Alexey will perform this demanding piece on the grand piano recently installed in the Central Gallery, which is kindly on loan from the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
Our event will start off with a short talk by Robert Gibson, the TSO’s Content Manager and Special Projects Curator, who will give us some background on Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev and his famous ‘War Sonatas’. Robert will be a familiar face from TSO pre-concert talks, as well as the excellent ‘Daily Dose’ online series by the TSO when we were in covid lockdown.
Drinks will be served after the talk, and then we’ll take our seats for the performance of Sonata Number 7 by Alexey.
This is a great opportunity to support TMAG in pursuing something different in the Central Gallery, with its beautiful acoustic. And thanks are due to the TSO for making this wonderful instrument available.
Members $45, non-members $55, including a glass of wine or non-alcoholic drink
