Michelle Berry and Belinda Bauer will present an introduction to the specialist field of object conservation, drawing on their extensive experience in the field. This will be followed by a discussion of the work of the object conservators on the recently opened Islands to Ice exhibition and a walk through the exhibition.
This floor talk is limited to 30 attendees. Michelle and Belinda will speak to the full group in the members’ lounge, and will then take us in two groups of 15 through Islands to Ice, with the groups swapping over so you'll have a chance to hear from both presenters.
Our speakers
After studying materials conservation at the University of Canberra, and completing a Bachelor of Applied Science in the Conservation of Cultural Materials in 1989, Michelle Berry worked as an object conservator in several Australian museums and art galleries. Before moving to Tasmania in 2009 Michelle worked for Museums Victoria as Senior Conservator, Collection Preservation, focusing on strategic preventive conservation. Following a lifelong interest in archaeology Michelle has also worked as an archaeological conservator in Egypt, Thailand, and Antarctica.
Belinda Bauer is the Vertebrate Zoology Collection Manager at TMAG. Her role includes the making of zoological specimens for TMAG’s collection and the cataloguing, care and conservation of vertebrate material. Belinda has had many museum roles over the last 25 years as an archaeologist, cultural advisor, museum preparator and zoology collection manager at Queensland Museum, Natural History Museum of Ireland and TMAG. Belinda is a gooreng-gooreng Aboriginal woman from the central coast of Queensland. She has degrees in Archaeology and Palaeoanthropology and a Masters in Museum Studies.
