World Environment Day
World Environment Day, established by the UN in 1972, is celebrated annually on 5 June. It aims to raise global awareness and encourage actions for the protection of the environment. Its motto is:
Better environment, better tomorrow. Save the planet Earth. Let us make our planet a better place.
So what does this mean to you? Do you feel overwhelmed? What are your fears for the future? Do you think about it?
Prominent Tasmanian environmental educator and sustainability advocate Nel Smit will talk about overcoming despair and what she does to make a difference for a better environment.
This is a FREE event and you are welcome to bring non-member friends.
OUR SPEAKER:
Nel Smit worked at the Molesworth Environment Centre and as a Landcare Curriculum officer for the Dept of Education, and was Education officer for Greening Australia for nine years. She wrote the book, My Patch, which focuses on the change of a square metre of the earth.
At Huonville High she won the Zayed Future Energy Prize of $130,000 that took students to Abu Dhabi and funded renewable energy initiatives in the school.
Nel initiated the Tasmanian Youth Climate Leaders Program in 2007 and continues to manage the Program. Each year over 200 students around Tasmania take local action to reduce the impacts of climate change.
Nel is the convenor of Nipaluna Nursery, a passionate volunteer group supporting local biodiversity through indigenous plant propagation. Since its inception in 2021 the group has grown over 50,000 indigenous plants for the Midlands Biodiversity Hot Spot. This has involved collecting seed, germinating and planting back on farms in the Midlands. The group featured recently with ‘The Heart of Regeneration’ on Gardening Australia.
Nel’s lifelong commitment to environmental education and community engagement continues to inspire sustainable practices throughout Tasmania.
