Restoring the past: art conservation

Step inside a world few ever get to see. Our Restoring the Past event invites visitors behind the scenes of art conservation, revealing the painstaking work that protects our cultural heritage for future generations. The Restoring the Past exhibition showcases the extraordinary restoration of three significant 19th‑century paintings and their ornate frames, including the portraits of Thomas and Catherine Chapman, and a landscape by John Glover.

TMAG’s Senior Conservator (Painting) Jennifer Bird, Assistant Conservator Kate McKay, and Conservation Technician Lisa Charleston (pictured above) will take you through the remarkable transformation stories behind these works and share the challenges of preserving fragile artworks, the delicate techniques used to revive them, and the thoughtful decisions that guide every step of the conservation process.

The conservation team will then take us through the exhibition in the Salon Gallery and will be happy to chat to you and answer any questions.

For those who attended our visit to the art conservation lab last year, this is your opportunity to see the finished works on display.

Friends members $25, non-members $30

includes refreshments

This project, along with the research that underpins it, has been made possible through the generous support of the Keith Clarke Foundation.
