The Friends of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery have launched this petition to the Tasmanian Parliament calling on the State Government to reverse the proposed cuts to scientific, exhibitions and design staff at TMAG.
TMAG is Australia’s second oldest museum and has been at the cultural, scientific and educational heart of Tasmania since 1848.
TMAG’s legislation requires it to care for and grow the State collection, to reflect the Tasmanian story, and to promote the use of that collection through research, exhibitions and public programs.
TMAG’s scientists provide critical advice that supports the operation of legislation underpinning Tasmania’s biodiversity, biosecurity, nature conservation and agricultural industries. Their work is not optional. It is part of the knowledge base that helps Tasmania understand, protect and manage its natural environment.
TMAG is also one of the most visited places in Tasmania. It contributes to the State’s economy, to its reputation, and to the experience of visitors who come here seeking to understand this island’s distinctive natural and cultural life.
That is why we are asking Tasmanian residents to add their names to this petition. We are asking the Parliament and the State Government to recognise the value of TMAG’s staff, and to ensure that they are properly supported to continue their dedicated, professional and significant work.
With appropriate funding, TMAG can continue to be a driver in the scientific, cultural and economic life of Tasmania. It can continue to care for the State collection, to share Tasmania’s stories, and to serve future generations.
