The Royal Collection
Dr Mary Knights
Thursday 5 March, 10.30am
Central Gallery, TMAG
The Royal Collection is the largest collection of European art in the world. Spanning over 500 years, the collection reflects the influence of royal patronage and the impact of international relations on art history. Including a wide range of objects — from paintings and sculpture, to armour and gilt carriages — the collection has been brought together through purchases and commissions, dynastic marriages, diplomatic gifts and exchanges, conflict, war and colonisation.
Dr Mary Knights, TMAG’s Senior Curator of Art, was one of thirty participants invited to take part in the ‘Attingham Trust Royal Collection Studies 2025’. This opportunity gave her privileged access to visit royal palaces and to study the treasures in the Royal Collection. In this talk, Mary will focus on portraits held in the Royal Collection and some intriguing connections with the TMAG Art Collection.
